MOTORIN’ FOR MATCHES Valley bikers rally to support Big Brothers Big Sisters at the agency’s Bike for Kids’ Sake fundraiser on Saturday.
“We have people in our club from all walks of life who just enjoy riding motorcycles and supporting causes in our community,” stated Pat Logan, president of Proud American Riders. “We have over 60 members in our club who raise $12,000 to $13,000 for local charities each year. We always enjoy participating in the Big Brothers Big Sisters ride.” Photo : Hunter Miller, 6, of Mount Crawford gets some help strapping on his helmet from his stepfather Kevin Burgoon at Bike for Kids' Sake to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters. Big Brothers Big Sisters matches youth ages 5 to 14 in professionally-supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships with caring adult volunteers. Among other improvements, local evaluation data shows that children in the program progress academically, avoid delinquency and other risky behaviors, and experience increased self-confidence. Saturday’s event provided an opportunity to raise both funds and awareness for the local donor and volunteer-supported organization. “We are happy to provide the venue for this event,” explained Mitch Troyer, Vice President of Sales at Blue Ridge Powersports. “We believe in helping the community and believe in the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters, specifically. We hope that our participation also encourages those in the powersports community to consider becoming mentors to be matched with kids in the program.” “It is fantastic to see so many of our neighbors and friends doing something they enjoy to support our local youth,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director Sue Totty. “We are thankful to the sponsors, partners and participants who came together to make Bike for Kids’ Sake a success.
